Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Very Helpful with my need to come to terms with a childhood filled with Evangelical Warriors as parents My relationship with them is still quite close, though my own beliefs are quite different from theirs.
This is something I read to keep from getting angry at pdf download of book-trusting doubt. Format: Paperback Verified Purchase. I used to think that, too. But now I realize I was mistaken, pdf download of book-trusting doubt.
By trying to keep the same beliefs as our ancestors, fundamentalism forces us to betray the very heart of Christianitythe quest to better know and serve a Pdf download of book-trusting doubt whose core attributes are love and truth, pdf download of book-trusting doubt.
For each of us this is a sacred responsibility and a sacred gift, the gift and responsibility of spiritual growth. This context-free literalism ties Evangelicals to traditional doctrines, preventing the theological growth that might otherwise accompany our growing understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
It maintains the balance of nature. The fact that no human escapes this fate pdf download of book-trusting doubt that humans are not capable of escaping this fate. These behaviors are built in. If they are flaws, they are design flaws. The negative impact on the victim, other than some propitiation of moral outrage, remains unchanged, pdf download of book-trusting doubt.
All it does is settle a score. What would determine the response of the United States? Would the victors in the end face a Nuremberg court? What is good? How can we live in moral community with each other? In fact, pdf download of book-trusting doubt dialogue already is taking place across the globe, and it is no longer under the strict control of a priestly class or the biases of an isolated culture.
I figured I would like this because just the title calls to question Evangelical Christianity. But I didn't realize how tender it would be toward religion and individual beliefs in general. Yes; it is very critical of evangelical Christianity, and the author gives well reasoned and complete justification for criticism. She also goes into the history of the religion and the history of the canonism. She brings forward the idea that all oral traditions did not, categorically, make it into any religion, much less Christianity itself.
But there is a lot to respect of people pdf download of book-trusting doubt truly believe and observe their own forms of Christianity. I think that my review is sort of disconnected and directionless, but I really liked the book! This is a good read. Tarico scores some valuable points on the weakness of the Trinity concept and that the scriptural Jesus' compassion undermines and contradicts the Biblical portrayal of God's demand for a mathematical settling of accounts, very much like a judge calculating and awarding compensation for a real-estate dispute--not a particularly compelling picture of spiritual guidance, shelter, welcoming and stewardship.
But, I found Tarico's pdf download of book-trusting doubt in the book uneven are we supposed to jettison what we can learn from art, because it fails her "scientific method" test? I've come across several books and websites that, all in all, do a pretty good job giving the lie to literalism; but I've yet to find one that logically goes to the root and shows fundamentally WHAT at the core is wrong e.
Such books and artworks are probably around and my hope is pdf download of book-trusting doubt become more prominent. One person found this helpful. I just read Valerie Tarico's "Trusting Doubt. She simply describes the tenet or claim, examines what the world, or life, or Christian behavior, or the Bible's God would be like if that claim were true, and then unpacks it in the light of real-world evidence.
It is balanced and fair. Each chapter is thorough, with a "To Consider" section at the end with summary, further information, and so on - it could almost be used as a workbook and it definitely is a useful resource for anybody who is in the chaotic and troubling process of re-evaluating their faith.
Even though I'm past that process, this is the one book I'll always want to have at hand because it is broad, compelling, and so well explained! See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. I really wanted to enjoy this book, and having read some of Dr. Tarico's articles on her blog, I looked forward to reading something with some substance and containing interesting, thought-provoking and ultimately upbuilding ideas. However, while I appreciated the clarity, forcefulness and honesty of Dr.
Tarico's arguments, I have to say that there is little to like in this book. There are a few episodes of dry humour, and a couple of 'lessons learned' where, despite the dark and hopeless conclusions she reaches at the end of most chapters, she does manage to salvage a few gems of wisdom and learning.
But, otherwise, the book would be more suitable for those who already believe There. God; for those seriously considering leaving the Christian faith and this book would indeed convince you to do so ; or for Goths.
